Why?
I really like novels where the character has a complicated or confusing past, where there are family secrets or disagreements over what actually happened. I also like books with characters struggling to discover who they are, what's important to them and where they're going (literally or figuratively).
Cassie's relationship with her mother, whether she did or did not do what her mother claims, her stay in a mental institution, and now starting college and deciding how (if?) her mother fits in her life, The First Time She Drowned is a book I am really looking forward to reading.
